Port of Duqm Welcomes World’s Largest BYD Car Carrier in Major Logistics Milestone

Port of Duqm Welcomes World’s Largest BYD Car Carrier in Major Logistics Milestone

The port of Duqm, located in the Sultanate of Oman, has now come to a level of operations. This is because of the arrival of one of the world’s Roll-On/Roll-Off (Ro-Ro) automotive carriers. This ship belongs to BYD, a car company that manufactures electric vehicles.

This arrival shows how ready the port is for advanced operations. It highlights the port’s deep-water draft capacity and modern terminal infrastructure. These features allow it to handle the generation of mega-cargo ships.

Port officials said the process went smoothly. The discharge of vehicles and rolling cargo was efficient and safe. This showcases the facility’s handling capabilities. It also confirms the effectiveness of the berth safety protocols and fast logistics operations at the Port of Duqm.

Positioned strategically along the Arabian Sea within the Special Economic Zone at Duqm (SEZAD), the port offers direct access to major international shipping routes connecting Asia, Europe, and Africa. Marine authorities noted that welcoming vessels of this scale reinforces Duqm’s emerging status as a critical transshipment hub for the global automotive industry.

By providing direct connectivity to fast-growing consumer markets across the Middle East, South Asia, and East Africa, the port offers global manufacturers significant supply chain efficiencies and reduced transit times compared to traditional regional maritime routes.

The landmark berthing aligns directly with the strategic objectives outlined in Oman Vision 2040, which prioritises economic diversification, infrastructure modernisation, and the expansion of the national logistics sector. As global automotive supply chains shift toward cleaner vehicle transport and larger eco-friendly shipping fleets, the Port of Duqm continues to expand its bulk, container, and Ro-Ro handling facilities.

Local trade officials highlighted that successful operations with global market leaders like BYD elevate Oman’s profile in the international maritime transport arena, attracting further foreign direct investment and commercial shipping lines to the Sultanate.

Port management reiterated its commitment to continually upgrading berth infrastructure, expanding storage yards, and integrating modern digital customs processes to support growing cargo volumes. The arrival of the BYD car carrier represents a decisive step in transforming the Port of Duqm into a premier regional maritime and trade gateway.
