Oman Pioneering AI Data Analytics as National Income and Expenditure Surge

The Sultanate of Oman has made great strides towards modernising its public administration through the introduction of the results of the world’s first AI-powered Household Income and Expenditure Survey.

The revolutionary digital project, introduced by the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI) at an event held in Muscat, replaces traditional manual field data-gathering efforts with machine learning framework technology and represents a new worldwide standard in government statistics generation.

The statistics show that the economic development in the Sultanate of Oman is quite remarkable compared to the figures of 2018. The average household income per month in Oman rose by 18.5 per cent to OMR 1,839.3 ($4,777). Meanwhile, expatriate household earnings rose by 7.3 per cent to average OMR 717.2 ($1,863) monthly. Across all resident demographics combined, the average total monthly household income climbed 18.7 per cent to OMR 1,392.8 ($3,617).

Shifts in consumer spending habits mirrored this upward trajectory. Total average monthly expenditure for Omani families rose 13.7 per cent to OMR 1,058.8 ($2,750), while expatriate family spending increased 11 per cent to OMR 402 ($1,044) per month. Overall, combined monthly household expenditure across Oman climbed 15.9 per cent to reach OMR 798 ($2,072), compared to OMR 687.5 in 2018.

By automating complex data synthesis, the AI-powered framework developed entirely by Omani talent drastically cuts operational overhead while dramatically reducing human error. According to Dr Khalifa bin Abdullah Al Barwani, CEO of the NCSI, integrating artificial intelligence into socio-economic surveying equips state planners with near real-time analytics.

The enhanced precision improves calculations for the Consumer Price Index (CPI), enables accurate inflation modelling, and optimises social welfare distribution under the strategic umbrella of Oman Vision 2040.

As Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) nations accelerate digital transformation efforts across public institutions, Oman’s successful integration of machine learning into national census frameworks establishes a scalable blueprint for evidence-based economic governance.
